ABOUT MEHi, I’m Marika.
Hello, my name is Marika van Dommelen. I’m a professional photographer, a mother, a wife, a sister, and a friend. I live in Langley, BC with my husband, our dog Maizie, and our cat Mindy.
Photography, for me, is all about perspective. I was born with Spina Bifida and have spent most of my life as a wheelchair user, which has shaped the way I experience and see the world around me. That unique perspective has become a core part of how I approach photography.
For as long as I can remember, I’ve wanted to do something creative. It wasn’t until about fifteen years ago that I picked up a camera and something just clicked, literally and figuratively. Looking through the lens opened up a new way for me to connect with the world, and I began to find my voice through images rather than words.
My photography is an extension of how I move through life: with a desire to capture beauty, quiet grace, and moments that often go unnoticed. One of the biggest challenges I’ve faced, limited physical access, has also become one of my greatest gifts. It’s inspired me to find new ways to express my creativity, and that persistence has become part of my process.
Sharing my work means sharing part of myself, and I’m so grateful to be able to do that through my photos. Thank you for being here, and for taking the time to explore the way I see the world.
